Michael Lonechild, a Cree painter, was born in 1955 and
raised on the Whitebear First Nation in southeastern
Saskatchewan. At an early age, Micheal developed an
appreciation for the way of life of in the community,
and these memories are reflected in his paintings.
In his work he captures the feeling of serenity and
sentimentality that shroud the style of the days of the
horse-drawn era. Many of the images included the essence
with which the First Nations people understand the dual
relationship of the spiritaul and physical realm.
Another aspect of his work portrays people living off
the land and their relationship to it compared to the
imposing realities of the oil rigs on lands where his
people once hunted. Michael is a self-taught artist. He
states, "My technique is what people call the
'overlapping style': I paint over and over the same area
to build up the mood." His paintings can be found in
corporate, gallery and private collections throughout
North America.
