| George Franklin Arbuckle was
born in Toronto, Ontario in 1909. He studied at
the Ontario College of Art under J.W. Beatty, F.S.
Challener, & J.E.H. MacDonald. George also
taught art at the Northern Vocational School in Toronto
from 1932-38, and at the Franz Johnston Summer School in
Georgian Bay from 1932-40. He was married to a
Canadian painter named Frances-Anne Johnston, daughter
of Group of Seven member Franz Johnston.
George was made president of
the Royal Canadian Academy from 1960-64. He is
represented in the I.B.M. Collection of Contemporary
Art, and the R.C.A. Diploma Collection in the National
Gallery of Canada. He exhibited at the Royal
Canadian Academy from 1932-66, and the Montreal Museum
of Fine Arts from 1946-67.
George's special knowledge of
historical subjects contributed greatly to his stature
as an illustrator, his landscapes, cityscapes and
figurative paintings offer a mixture of both Realism and
Impressionism.
